Twelve Oaks Senior Living Update

Background

Twelve Oaks Foundation and a local nonprofit, Episcopal Communities & Services for Seniors (ECS), affiliated in 2021 to preserve and enhance the Twelve Oaks mission of providing seniors in the surrounding community with accessible housing and healthcare services. As part of the affiliation, ECS made a commitment to invest in the sustainability of Twelve Oaks. Since that time, ECS has provided funds for short-term building and land improvements. In addition, ECS and its architects, engineers, and contractors, created the Twelve Oaks Redevelopment Plan (the Plan).

The Plan

During the design process, the existing buildings were determined to be neither suitable for redevelopment nor efficient for sustainable operations. Therefore, the Plan was developed based on the needs and preference of seniors and the proposed community’s attractiveness to neighbors and the local area. The Plan will replace 14 existing building structures with a single, multilevel, Craftsman-style structure oriented at the center of the property. The community will provide up to 120 seniors with moderately priced residential care and memory care – approximately three times its current capacity.

The location of the building will take advantage of the sloping topography, while preserving the unique woodland character and natural beauty. The oak trees are an important part of the community and the community’s identity, therefore, the vast majority of the trees will remain in place.

Pending city approvals, initial site work could begin in 2025, with  construction starting in 2026 and proceeding over about 24 months.

The Transition

Unfortunately, the current buildings will not be suitable or safe to house and care for residents throughout construction. Because ECS and Twelve Oaks believe the well-being of the existing residents is the priority, residents and their families will receive relocation support, and have been provided more than six months’ notice of temporary closure on February 28, 2025.
